Joe is the successful screenwriter behind a series of blockbuster movies. His name on a script guarantees box office success.
Joe's personal life is in shambles. He hasn't had a date in over eighteen years, and his relationship with the daughter he raised by himself has gone off the rails.
Joe thinks about the early years when he and Sofia would go to The Bronx to spend Christmas with the family. Sofia was such a happy child then.
Surrounded by a houseful of grandmas and grandpas and aunts, uncles, and cousins, the family didn't notice that Sofia had problems...at first. It helped that Sofia received Laurence the Bear, her new lifelong friend that stuck with her even during the bad times.
Sofia's personality changed dramatically in her early teens, and her increasingly explosive, irrational behavior wreaked havoc on Joe's family.
Joe switched their visits to The Bronx to summertime. Just because he was lonely and miserable at Christmas, he didn't see the need to inflict misery on his family during the holidays.
During a doctor's visit, Joe meets Jennifer, a pediatric oncology nurse. Her charm, intelligence, and compassion causes Joe to fall hard and fast for the blonde beauty. Her kindness and understanding were a true gift that Joe needed.
Compared to a ward full of kids with cancer, Joe's problems with Sofia's personality disorder seemed less overwhelming...until Sofia interfered with Joe and Jennifer's blooming romance.
Jennifer's sunny disposition hides a dark side. She, and several other women including nurses and patients, had been assaulted by a prominent doctor who always got away with his crimes.
The victims wrote out a prescription for justice, and the doctor is serving 12-20 at San Quentin Maximum Security Prison.
Jennifer applies her charm and gets Sofia a job at the hospital. Interacting with the sick children gave them a common goal of doing what they could to improve life for the kids. Laurence goes with Sofia to lend a hand.
Jennifer slowly works her way into Sofia's heart, and Jennifer, Joe, and Sofia throw a huge party for the kids from the cancer ward.
The joy that all of the families share brings a new start for everyone...including Laurence! The kids brought Laurence a girlfriend named Vivien!
